A blown fuse could cause this problem. Most likely this is a faulty latch in the liftgate. Since the ajar light is on this tells me the latch is the problem. Once you have the gate open you can test for power when pressing the open button. If you have power and ground then this will verify that the latch is the problem.

Try opening it at handle and lifting at the same time. Check body gaps between tail gate and tail light. Other than that could be the catch itself , needing adjusted or needing replaced. The only thing that happens when I do the above is the hazard lights flash 2X, which I believe normal.
