If he's been dry-firing it, it's possible the firing pin is mushroomed slightly or the spot where the firing pin hits on the barrel is peened so there's a dent there now which reduces the force the firing pin can put on it to pinch the rim of the cartridge. [also the advice in the post above is all good]
Hello-. Just got back from the range with my 39a golden (circa 1985). I was having about a 1 out of 10 misfire ratio. I was using Federal copperplated hollow points. The firing pin was striking the same spot consistently, but it seemed to be not striking close enough to the rim. The Model 39 is designed to not hurt it's self when dry fired. However, we are talking about beating on those parts with a hammer. Literally. My worry is that some day, some how, the firing pin stop will wear enough to allow contact with the chamber.
