Under the general options for Unit Frames, there should be a Global Fade option that you can enable and then slide a bar for desired opacity. Then under each unit frame category, you can click Inherit Global Fade. This will cause Unit Frames to fade out to the set Global Fade opacity unless you are in Combat or have a Target.

Elvui has an interface where you can increase the size of the happiness face so I can easily tell when my pet is unhappy just from a glance (green,yellow,red).
