4runner differential fluid.

Since my 4Runner has an open diff in the rear I would prefer to use a diff fluid that doesn’t have a friction modifier already added. The amsoil long life synthetic fluid doesn’t seem to have a friction modifier in it so Im now considering that. I just recently purchased my 2015 4runner with 95k miles. One of the first things I wanted to do was some maintenance that I know weren’t done on the vehicle. Was doing the differential fluid change and ran into a problem. I changed the back but had to replace the fill plug because how bad it was seized in there.

Theoretically, it was actually possible for all the torque in your 4wd vehicle to go to one single wheel. Now lock that center differential, and you get 50% torque going to the front, 50% going to the rear regardless of traction. However, if the front and rear axle differentials are open, the torque will still go to the wheel with less resistance.

There was a bit of metal paste on the drain plug magnets, but the clarity of the oil was quite good. The T-case oil essentially looked like the new oil I put in.
