Telehealth was shown to reduce costs to the health system in the short to medium term in 53%, 50%, and 32% of the cost-minimization, cost-effectiveness, and cost-utility studies reviewed, respectively. The predominant reason for reduced costs was when the health system–funded travel (patient or clinician) was reduced or avoided.
Objective. The objective of this systematic literature review was to examine the research literature published during the COVID-19 pandemic to identify facilitators, barriers, and associated medical outcomes as a result of adopting telemedicine, and to determine if changes have occurred in the industry during this time.Only 30 of the 114 patients with four or more emergency department visits in 2020 received either a telehealth visit or were part of the remote care management group. Of the 30 high utilizers who participated in telehealth during 2020, 26 utilized telehealth appointments and only four of the patients were being managed by the RN care management.
