Two hotels I'd say aren't quite as nice but are decent (not too many shady people, clean enough, etc) are LaQuinta and the Quality Inn by the casino. Worked at both, and I'd stay at them myself. Only hotel I can say to avoid without question is the Avalon. Hampton Inn & Suites on Erie Bayfront is brand new, right near the water and downtown Erie.

The southern part of Erie going toward Millcreek is better, far east in Harborcreek, far west in Western Millcreek and into Fairview. I think Fairview has the best schools, but anywhere outside of Erie is good.
