You need fat in the pan or whatever you cook will burn. Think of the frying pan as exactly the same as the cooking pot except it can't hold water or boil things. Happened to me too.

The cooking pot is one of the best items in the game. It can hold 2 bottles worth of water. It can be used to cook more food than just a single burner will allow. It protects the items inside it. It can be used as a heat pack once it's been heated up. It doesn't take up any more inventory space because you can put things in it.

A buddy of mine has an ammo box laying behind his tent that he thru away two weeks ago and its still there.
