The bullet vendor offered a table of loads supposedly supplied by Lyman. The bullet is said to be Lyman #457130 (150 gr.).Low bulky density and superior ignition characteristics make 5744 an excellent choice for reduced loads in many rifle calibers and in large capacity black powder cartridges such as the 45-70 through 45-120 and 50-90 through 50-120. 21,259. To use or not to use a filler in the 45-70 depends. It depend as it does with most other cartridges with cast bullets but also because the 45-70 can be loaded to 4 different levels with cast bullets. What applies within the parameters of one level may not apply within another level.

45/70 using 4895 powder. I follow a number of forums, many times as the posts pertain to cast bullet and recently I saw some posts about 45/70 loads using 4895. Hmmmmmmmmm! I am very satisfied with the results I'm currently getting with a 465gr Wide Flat Nose pushed to 1650fps by 47.5gr of H335. GREAT on deer and elk!

One issue with the 45-70 is that some powders are more position sensitive in this large case when using loads for cast bullets. I have used some fillers and have had some level of success with them as well. The subject of fillers in the 45-70 is controversial and I am aware of their dangers and advantage. Cary .A 405 gr. cast bullet will be easy to keep under 1120 fps, and thus will give your your subsonic load. New to loading, that choice, I feel, will give you the right tools to work with and not cause dangerous levels. One can easily overload a case like the 45-70 with fast burning pistol powder like Unique.Well, here is the "deal" with the OAL. Hornady states that the OAL should be 2.590. However, they also state that the brass should be trimmed to a length of 2.040. Well, the SAMI spec calls for the 45-70 brass to be 2.105. That puts the Hornady brass at .065 (sixty five thousands) shorter than the SAMI spec.

Might want to use a magnum rifle primer to ignite the hard to start powder if things work out but have unburnt powder in the bore.
