Order of what I enjoyed reading the most: Mason & Dixon. Against the Day. Go read the book that inspired so many different adaptations no one who hasn't read is is quite sure what's in the original. It's a fairly quick read, and is by no means just for children. It's a quite interesting book, if a bit hard to follow at times. I might call it a Victorian Hitchhiker's Guide. It's the source of dozens of pop references ... II. The Book of Lost Tales, Part 2. The Book of Lost Tales was Tolkien's first go at creating his mythology. It is sort of a proto-Silmarillion; all of the tales are retold in other forms in the later works, but here Tolkien is a very young writer feeling his way. III. The Lays of Beleriand. Starts with short biographies of the 6 main players in this history, and then gives a fascinating detailed account of their accumulation of and fights for power. North America. 1861: The Civil War Awakening by Adam Goodheart: A popular history book that discusses the mood of the nation in the lead-up to the Civil War. My personal favorite (well, a tie-in with Ravenloft), is the most well-known one and The Library is the best resource on the books or if you want a timeline of major (and lesser) events.
